SETUP |
|
| |
A few Ethiopians who realized the eminent necessity of family planning for the society’s well being established the Family Guidance Association of Ethiopia (FGAE) in 1966 as a non-profit voluntary Association. Since then, the Association has been working in enhancing family planning, mainly focusing on women’s health issues related to frequent births. The early years of the Association’s operation in the field of reproductive health was not obviously an easy one. At times the road was bumpy and challenging due to the existing pronatalist attitudes and misperception on the part of the then authorities who assumed that the Association’s effort is aggressively forwarded to control the population. As time went on, however, most of the predicaments were gradually fading out; as a result, the staff and volunteers were able to openly disseminate the needed information using different strategies like public gatherings and forums. Establishing a recurrent partnership with the government and other civil organizations that work in Sexual and Reproductive Health areas, FGAE has been playing a fundamental role in sensitizing public awareness on the effects of rapid population growth on socio-economic development.
An important landmark in the history of the association was its registration by the then Ministry of Interior as a non-governmental, voluntary humanitarian organization in 1974. Following this event, and its official recognition, FGAE has become an associate member of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), in 1975. With its long years of credible work experience and services as a learning center, currently, FGAE is one of the leading family planning Association in the world.
FGAE’s shift of focus from FP to the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) needs of adolescents aged 10-24, was officiated in 2000.
